Charged with rape, Donell Mbele, the son of former Generation actress Sonia Mbele, made an appearance in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Monday, January 20.
What Donell Mbele Did?
The 23-year-old is charged with two rape counts that his girlfriend allegedly reported. According to her attorney, the victim claimed that on December 14 and 15, 2024, Donell sexually assaulted her twice on different days. [1]
When Donell’s use of crutches was observed during the court proceedings, he was questioned about the incident. He said that while he was getting out of the car, an e-hailing driver allegedly tried to steal his phone and drove off. Donell Mbele asserted that police officers attempted, but were unsuccessful, to extort R350 000 from his family using fictitious dockets prior to the rape case being opened.

What the Prosecuter Said
The girlfriend filed a rape case against Donell shortly after he wanted to tell the court about the police’s attempt to defraud his family of roughly R350 000 using fictitious dockets, according to prosecutor Given Mbedzi. According to NPA spokeswoman Phindile Mjonondwane, he will be subject to the law if he is found guilty.

“I was violated by someone I thought I could trust. Someone I held close to my heart.” I never thought that this could happen to me & was very devastated when it did. “This happened in his home (South Africa), in his room. At first I consented to it but later changed my mind and didn’t want to get through with it & lasked him to stop and he didn’t , “I repeated myself multiple times and even started crying because he wouldn’t stop”. The first time it happened was around 10pm on the 14th & I remember another incident where he just got on top of me, pinned me down & forced himself onto me. “I told him to get off me and he refused & instead decided to record everything”. “Fortunately I was able to get the video from his as evidence of what he did to me.”

We were in a relationship for almost 6 months & we went public about it on the 13th of December when we met. Also, “I tried leaving that night but he told me it’s too late to take an uber alone and I should rather stay & leave in the morning”, I agreed because I was scared to take an uber alone at that time of the night. Ladies, please be careful out there. & always put yourself first.”

Donell Mbele next Court date
“The charges stem from a complaint that his 17-year-old girlfriend filed with the Sandton police, claiming that Mbele sexually assaulted her at his Morningside home on December 14 and 15, 2024. [2]
“She clarified that they were at Clearwater Mall on a date. They decided to relocate after enjoying some drinks and learning that the restaurant was going to close. According to her, the accused allegedly recommended that they visit his home so that he could charge his phone. According to Mjonondwane, the incidents allegedly happened when they arrived. Donell was released on R1,000 bail, and the case has been rescheduled for Monday, February 10.
