Early life and education

Radebe was one of the 11 kids born to Emily and Johannes Radebe in the nearby Johannesburg community of Soweto’s Diepkloof. He attended the nearby Bopasenatla Secondary School up until the age of 15. His parents sent him to one of the former homelands, Bophuthatswana, for Grade 10 to keep him away from the hazardous Diepkloof Zone Four neighbourhood in Soweto. He went at Ngotwane High School, which is close to Zeerust.

Football Career

He was seen by Patrick Ntsoelengoe while he was representing amateur team ICL Birds in the now-defunct Bophuthatswana Soccer League, and in 1989, he signed him to the Kaizer Chiefs, one of South Africa’s top teams. Radebe started out as a custodian with the Kaizer Chiefs before moving on to central midfield and finally central defence.

United of Leeds

In 1994, Leeds United acquired Radebe and Philemon “Chippa” Masinga, a second South African football player, for a fee of £250,000. Radebe was merely added to the deal to placate Masinga, but he ended up being a wiser investment.
